Hatteras

Hatteras Island is an unspoiled paradise and offers a plethora of outdoor activities including surfing, kite boarding, wind surfing, birding, paddling and more.  About 75% of the area remains in its natural state due to it being protected by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.  Of course, one of the main attractions are the beaches which are perennially voted among the Top 10 beaches in the US, by Dr. Beach.

The island was connected to the northern Outer Banks about 40 years ago, via bridge, but it has really been within the last 10 years or so that development has really picked up.  Thousands of new luxury rental homes have been built and are catering to tourists in record numbers.  This is a fantastic place to enjoy a "get away from it all" lifestyle and vacation.  The area also has lots of shopping and restaurants to take care of all your needs.

There are seven villages on Hatteras Island - Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.  Hatteras Island is steeped in history and worth a visit.  For more historical information visit http://www.hatterasguide.com/history/.

Origin of the name - "Hatteras" is an English rendition of a Native American word that meant "there is less vegetation" and was originally referred to on John White's map of 1585 as "Hattorask".
